How the pool loan payment is calculated
payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) · r = APR ÷ 12 · n = months
This is the standard amortisation formula for a fixed-rate loan, the same for pool financing as for any installment loan. Borrowing 40,000 USD at 5 % for 60 months costs 754.85 USD a month; 60,000 USD at 8 % for 120 months, 727.97 USD; 25,000 USD at 6.5 % for 84 months, 371.24 USD. Total interest is the payment × months minus the amount borrowed.
| APR | 5 years | 10 years | 15 years | 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 % | 967 | 555 | 422 | 358 |
| 8 % | 1,014 | 607 | 478 | 418 |
| 10 % | 1,062 | 661 | 537 | 483 |
| 12 % | 1,112 | 717 | 600 | 551 |
Payment versus total cost
A longer term lowers the payment but raises what you pay overall: 50,000 USD at 8 % is 607 USD a month and about 22,800 USD of interest over 10 years, or 478 USD a month and about 36,000 USD of interest over 15. Running costs come on top of the payment: chemicals, electricity for the pump and, if you heat, fuel. Estimate them with the pool pump electricity cost calculator and the pool heating cost calculator; for the size of the pool, start with the pool volume calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How is a pool loan payment calculated?
With the standard amortisation formula: payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the amount borrowed, r the APR ÷ 12 and n the number of months. 40,000 USD at 5 % for 60 months is 754.85 USD a month; 60,000 USD at 8 % for 120 months is 727.97 USD.
What is the monthly payment on a 50,000 dollar pool?
Borrowing the full 50,000 USD at 8 % APR costs 606.64 USD a month over 10 years and 477.83 USD over 15 years. At 9 % over 10 years it is 633.38 USD. Enter your own price, down payment, rate and term above; the table shows more combinations.
How much does 1 % APR change a pool loan payment?
On 50,000 USD over 10 years, going from 8 % to 9 % adds 26.74 USD a month, about 3,200 USD over the whole loan. The longer the term, the more each point of APR adds to the total interest.
Is a longer pool loan term better?
It lowers the payment but raises the total. 50,000 USD at 8 % costs about 22,800 USD in interest over 10 years and about 36,000 USD over 15 years, while the payment falls from 607 to 478 USD a month. Compare the total cost line above before you choose a term.
Does a down payment lower the pool loan payment?
Yes, in proportion. Every 10,000 USD paid up front cuts the payment at 8 % over 10 years by about 121 USD a month and saves about 4,560 USD of interest. It also leaves room in the budget for decking, fencing and a safety cover.
