Pool Unit Conversions

Pool numbers come in gallons and litres, ounces and grams, °F and °C. Type a value, pick its unit, and every matching unit is there as you type, from US gallons to cubic metres and from fluid ounces to millilitres.

The result line lists the value in every unit of the same kind. ppm and mg/L need no conversion in pool water: 1 ppm = 1 mg/L.

Chemical amounts: ounces, fluid ounces, pounds, ppm

Granular products are dosed by weight: 1 oz = 28.35 g, 1 lb = 16 oz = 453.6 g, 1 kg = 2.205 lb. Liquids are dosed by volume: 1 US fl oz = 29.57 mL, 128 fl oz = 1 gallon = 3.785 L, 1 quart = 32 fl oz. Concentration is the same in both systems: 1 ppm = 1 mg/L, so raising 37,854 litres (10,000 gallons) by 1 ppm takes 37.9 g of the active ingredient. The dosing calculators do this for you: pool chlorine calculator, pool salt calculator, pool stabilizer calculator; for the volume itself, the pool volume calculator shows gallons and litres together.

Exact definitions (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C): 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 L; 1 ft = 0.3048 m; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L. Results rounded for display.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a gallon?

One US gallon is 3.785 litres, so a 10,000-gallon pool holds 37,854 litres, or 37.85 cubic metres. An imperial (UK) gallon is larger, 4.546 litres. Every calculator on this site uses US gallons.

Is ppm the same as mg/L in pool water?

Yes. One part per million by weight is one milligram per kilogram, and a litre of pool water weighs about one kilogram, so 1 ppm = 1 mg/L. US test kits read in ppm, many European ones in mg/L; the numbers are the same.

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?

A cubic foot holds 7.48 US gallons, so one gallon is 0.134 cubic feet. That 7.48 is the factor in the rectangular pool volume formula: length × width × average depth in feet × 7.48. A cubic metre holds 264.2 gallons.

How do I convert pool temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: 82 °F is 27.8 °C, 78 °F is 25.6 °C and 104 °F is 40 °C. The other way: multiply by 9/5 and add 32, so 28 °C is 82.4 °F.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of pool chemical?

No. An ounce is a weight, 28.35 grams, used for granular products such as cal-hypo, stabilizer and soda ash. A fluid ounce is a volume, 29.57 mL, used for liquid chlorine and muriatic acid. Liquid chlorine is denser than water, so a fluid ounce of it weighs more than an ounce.
