Above-ground figures use the water level the capacity charts assume: 3.5 ft of water in a 48 in wall, 4 ft in a 52 in wall and 4.5 ft in a 54 in wall. Round: diameter × diameter × water depth × 5.9; oval: length × width × water depth × 5.9. The above ground pool volume calculator takes your own water level.

Average depth is the shallow end plus the deep end, divided by two: a pool from 3 ft to 8 ft averages 5.5 ft, from 3.5 ft to 6 ft, 4.75 ft. Rectangle: length × width × average depth × 7.48. A 16 × 32 pool from 3 to 8 ft holds 21,060 gallons; the same pool from 3.5 to 5.5 ft (4.5 ft average) holds 17,240.
What the gallons are for
Every chemical dose scales with the gallons, so a wrong volume means a wrong dose. Once you have yours, the pool chlorine calculator, the pool salt calculator and the pool pump size calculator take it from there; save it once in the pool gallon calculator and the other calculators fill it in for you.
Frequently asked questions
How many gallons is a 24 ft round above ground pool?
With a 52 in wall (4 ft of water) 24 × 24 × 4 × 5.9 = 13,590 gallons; with a 48 in wall (3.5 ft) 11,890; with a 54 in wall (4.5 ft) 15,290. At 52 in that is about 51,460 litres.
How many gallons is a 16x32 inground pool?
At 5.5 ft average depth (3 ft to 8 ft) 16 × 32 × 5.5 × 7.48 = 21,060 gallons; at 4.5 ft, 17,240; at 4 ft, 15,320. The average depth matters as much as the size, so measure the water at both ends.
How many gallons is a 12x24 pool?
As an above-ground oval with a 52 in wall, 12 × 24 × 4 × 5.9 = 6,800 gallons. As a rectangular inground pool at 4.5 ft average depth, 12 × 24 × 4.5 × 7.48 = 9,690 gallons. An oval holds about a fifth less than a rectangle of the same length and width.
How many gallons is a 33 ft round pool?
With a 54 in wall (4.5 ft of water) 33 × 33 × 4.5 × 5.9 = 28,910 gallons; with a 52 in wall, 25,700; with a 48 in wall, 22,490. It is the largest round size in the chart.
Why do pool capacity charts give different gallons?
They assume different water levels and factors. This chart uses 3.5 ft of water in a 48 in wall, 4 ft in 52 in and 4.5 ft in 54 in, and the pool-trade factor 5.9 for round and oval pools, which matches published capacity charts to the gallon. Measure your own water depth for the exact figure.
Formulas: 7.48 gallons per cubic foot; 5.9 for round and oval pools (π/4 × 7.48, rounded as the pool trade does); 1 gallon = 3.785 litres. Gallons rounded to the nearest 10, litres to the nearest 100.
